Cervical spondylosis, also known as cervical syndrome, is a general term for cervical osteoarthritis, proliferative cervical spondylitis, cervical nerve root syndrome, and cervical disc herniation. It is a disease due to degenerative pathological changes.
Main causes of the disease are long-term cervical spine strain, bone hyperplasia, or intervertebral disc prolapse, ligament thickening, causing cervical spinal cord, nerve roots or vertebral artery compression, resulting in a series of clinical syndromes of dysfunction.
What Are the Causes of Cervical Spondylosis?
1. Degeneration of cervical spine
Cervical degenerative changes are the main cause of cervical spondylosis. Intervertebral disc degeneration is the first factor of cervical vertebra structural degeneration, and it causes a series of pathological and physiological changes.
It includes intervertebral disc degeneration, the appearance of ligament intervertebral disc space and the formation of hematoma, the formation of vertebral marginal spur, the degeneration of other parts of cervical spine, and the reduction of sagittal diameter and volume of spinal canal.
2. Developmental cervical spinal stenosis
In recent years, it has been clear that the internal diameter of cervical spinal canal, especially the sagittal diameter, is not only related to the occurrence and development of the disease, but also closely related to the diagnosis, treatment, selection of surgical methods, and prognosis of cervical spondylosis.
In some cases, patients have serious cervical vertebra degeneration, and their osteophyte hyperplasia is obvious, but the disease does not onset. The main reason is that the sagittal diameter of the cervical spinal canal is wide and there is a large compensatory space in the spinal canal. Some patients with cervical degeneration are not very serious, but the symptoms appear early and are more serious.
3. Chronic strain
Chronic strain refers to various kinds of activities beyond the maximum limit of normal physiological activity or the time/value that can be tolerated locally. Because it is different from obvious trauma or accidents in life and work, it is easy to be ignored.
However, it is directly related to the occurrence, development, treatment, and prognosis of cervical spondylosis
1) Bad sleep position
Bad sleep position that cannot be adjusted in time for a long time when people are at rest will inevitably cause paravertebral muscle, ligament and joint imbalance.
2) Improper working posture
Many statistical materials show that the workload is not heavy, and the intensity is not high in some works, but the incidence rate of cervical spondylosis in sitting position, especially those with their head down often.
3) Improper physical exercise
Normal physical exercise is conducive to health, but activities or exercises beyond the neck tolerance, such as handstand or somersault with the head and neck as the load support point, can increase the load on the cervical spine, especially in the absence of correct guidance.
