Hand Exercises For Stroke Recovery
According to statistics, stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in China. 80% of patients experience acute upper limb paralysis after stroke, and only 30% of patients can achieve full functional recovery. Because of the delicate and complex anatomy of the hand, it is more difficult to recover from impaired hand function and the disability rate is high, which seriously affects the patients’ daily life and working ability.

We recommend several hand exercises for stroke recovery at home.
- Ball Grip
Hold ball tightly in palm of hand. Squeeze the ball, hold slowly and firmly for 10 seconds, and relax for 2 seconds once. Repeat ten times, for two sets.
In daily life, you can practice taking apples, steamed bread and so on.
Purpose: To strengthen grip strength and exercise hand flexor muscle strength.
- Stick Grip
Hold a hard or elastic stick of banana thickness, hold it slowly and firmly for 10 seconds, and relax it for 2 seconds for one time. In daily life, you can practice holding a broom, mop, door handle, etc.
Purpose : To improve grip strength and function of the opposite palm.
- Pinch
Put a piece of cardboard on the table, pinch it up from the side and then put it down for 1 time. In daily life, you can practice pinching business cards, keys, twisting locks, etc.
Purpose: To enhance the intrinsic muscle strength of the hand, etc.
- Fingertip pinch grip
Put a small object on the table, such as toothpicks, needles or beans, etc., pinch up from the table and then put down for 1 time.
Purpose: It mainly facilitates the strengthening of hand fine function exercises.
- Columnar grip
Put a round barrel-shaped object on the table and hold it from the table to pick it up and then put it down for 1 time. You can practice holding the cup in your daily life.
Purpose: To improve the hand flexor and intrinsic muscles.
- water bottle grip
Put a water bottle on the table, hold the water bottle up from the table and put it down once.
Purpose: To improve the hand flexor and intrinsic muscles.
7. Scissor Spread
Wrap putty around two fingers and try to spread the fingers apart. Repeat ten times, for two sets.
Purpose: To strengthen the intrinsic hand muscle strength.
8. Finger straightening
Fingers straight, the proximal joint of the metacarpal finger slightly flexed, the two adjacent fingers together to hold one end of the thick piece of paper, the other hand pinch the other end of the thick piece of paper, mutual confrontation force to both ends of the thick piece of paper. Adhere to a few seconds to relax as a group.
Purpose: To strengthen the intrinsic hand muscle strength.
